Internal Medicine
The Equine Medicine Service at OVH is run by Emma Shipman and Mark Bowen who are both RCVS/ACVS recognised specialists in Equine Internal Medicine. Both Emma and Mark are clinical lecturers in equine medicine at the University of Nottingham, working closely with other diploma holders in Internal Medicine, Pathology and Critical Care. They are able to provide a comprehensive and highly specialised medicine service for diagnosis and treatment of medical cases. These include colic and diarrhoea, weight loss, liver and kidney disease, respiratory disease, geriatric and endocrine problems, neurological disease, dermatology and ophthalmology cases, poor performance and neonatal disease.
We are able to provide 24 hour intensive care within the hospital, aided by two interns living on site, and our isolation facility enables us to treat horses suffering from contagious disease.
We are also extremely happy to offer telephone advice to our referring vets on all aspects of internal medicine, and are happy to discuss cases both when continuing treatment with the primary care clinician, or prior to referral. This is particularly important in the referral situation, prior to receiving cases with contagious disease, or neonatal foals.
